Projects

The Dearne Valley Venture Resource Centre is home to many projects. We can provide training, advice and sign posting facilities to community groups and individuals, and even provide a venue for your meetings. We run after school groups through our Study Support Team for 8-17 year olds, provide 'drop-in' sessions for any age in our Computer Suite, as well as more structured training in any number of subjects.

Our Dearne Development Co-Ordinator can provide training for Community Groups in subjects as diverse as the role played by company directors to First Aid. We pride ourselves on the fact that if we can't do it, we know someone who can!

The Resource Centre

Originally Bolton Junior Girls School, the Dearne Valley Venture Ltd. (incorporated in 1989), was moved from temporary premises in 1994, when the building was leased as a meeting place for several community groups. Since that date, the Centre has gone from strength to strength and is fast outgrowing the space we have.

The Centre is home to several projects such as:

Millennium Volunteers
Links 4 Youth
Study Support
Desk Top Publishing
The Cascade Project
The Volunteer Bureau
ICT Development Co-Ordinator
Dearne Development Co-Ordinator

We also run a successful Volunteer Bureau, but due to lack of space, this is hosted at Station House in Thurnscoe (Tel. 01709 888393).

The Centre is also home to a state of the art Recording Studio, Sight & Sound Music Studio, which offers safe and affordable rehearsal space for wannabe bands, as well as recording facilities for more established bands and artistes.

Millennium Volunteers

Millennium Volunteers is a UK-wide initiative for 16-24 year olds who want to volunteer their time for the benefit of others.

Disabled RidingCheerleaders

The Dearne Valley Millennium Volunteer Project began at the end of August 2000. We currently have around 270 volunteers signed, as well as a range of organisations that are placement providers.

Once recruited, a volunteer will be offered a suitable placement fitting their expectations for personal development opportunities.

Millennium Volunteers will be entitled to expenses for travel, child care and relevant training. MV's are always invited to suggest ways in which they can celebrate their achievements.

Certificates are presented at various stages of the MV programme:

200 hours volunteered: Award Of Excellence signed by the Secretary of State for Education & Skills

100 hours volunteered: Certificate signed by the Under-Secretary of State for Education & Skills.

MV Dearne Valley also provides certificates for every 25 hours of volunteering completed.

MV Awards are nationally recognised and are valuable additions to anyones CV.

Links 4 Youth

Links 4 Youth is a project linked to Millennium Volunteers Dearne Valley. It was set up in response to listening to young people who are not old enough to be a Millennium Volunteer (16-25) but wanted to do something good in their community or improve themselves by learning new skills, or who are already doing voluntary activities and wanted to receive accreditation and recognition for their efforts.

Certificates are earned by recording the amount of time spent on voluntary activities, they are given at 15, 30, 50 hours and so on for as long as the young person wishes to carry on or until the 16th birthday then the young person becomes a Millennium Volunteer.

Activities and projects can include helping with; School based projects such as – Buddy Mentoring, Music, School Band, Drama, School Council, Prefect etc.

Other activities include; Fundraising, Environmental, Helping in Youth Clubs, Sports, Dance etc.

Any young person aged between 11 and 15 can be involved in Links 4 Youth, and new ideas are always welcome.

In addition to our Youth Services, we also hold ‘Drop-In’ sessions for our Adult Learners (see Timetable) where adults can come to use the computers for whatever purpose they require, and we can also introduce them to more structured classes to learn more about specific subjects, such as Word Processing, Spreadsheets or basic file management etc.

Desk Top Publishing

If it's cheap printing you're after, then look no further. We don't do bulk colour printing (yet), but black and white is no problem!

Prints start at around £1.00 for 25 copies, and we can do as many as you like.

Desk Top Publishing

We can also do the layout design for your publication, be it newsletters, books, leaflets or posters, we design and print all business stationery and can design your group a new logo.

Photo Repair

We do photographic repairs and restorations, and the more difficult they are, the more we like them!

Bring us your favourite photos, and we'll create a stunning kaleidoscope for you. These are laminated and cut to shape, and can change an ordinary photo into a work of art!

The Cascade Project

This project was funded in 2005 from the Big Lottery and consists of three separate projects (The Volunteer Bureau, ICT Development and the Development Co-Ordinator).

The projects work independently, but provide support to the others. For example, the Development Co-ordinator may find that a group would benefit from IT training in order to produce their own publicity in the form of flyers or newsletters. The IT Co-Ordinator can then set up training for that group, which is tailored to meet their needs.

It may be that the Volunteer Co-Ordinator may come across a group, or individuals wishing to form a group, who would then be signposted to the Development Co-Ordinator to enable the group to move onwards and upwards with our support.

We believe that providing a holistic service can only strengthen our community.

The Volunteer Bureau

Have you ever thought about volunteering?

The Volunteer Bureau gives you information on the voluntary opportunities available in your area. We will help you to choose the type of work which suits you best, taking into account your experience, interests, time available, future plans and work situation. If you have never considered the benefits of volunteering - read on!

Examples of just what you could do to volunteer your time for are endless, for instance:

Admin/Clerical Work
Working With Children
Web Design
Gardening
Woodwork
Driving

Or anything else you might be interested in. We can help you to explore career options, develop new skills or share your existing ones with others.

We can supply:

Support
Training
Expenses
Advice

We give in-house certificates for completion of 50-200 hours of voluntary work as proof of your commitment for future employers.

So, if you want to explore career options - develop new skills - meet new people - gain confidence and self esteem, then give us a call on 01709 888393 and talk to Nigel.

ICT Development

We are responsible for the computer based training that goes on here at the DVV.

Unlike many organisations that are around, we are very much community led, which means that enough students ask for a particular course, then we will put it on for them. We can train individuals in one-to-one training, or group training in our IT Suite.

We cater for community groups, or groups of individuals with a thirst for learning something new, and our range of subject matter is wide.

We cover all the normal range of subjects, such as:

Word Processing (Word)
Spreadsheets (Excel)
Databases (Access)

And in addition to those, we also specialise in:

Presentations (Powerpoint)
Digital Imaging
Photographic Restoration
Desk Top Publishing
Computer Housekeeping (File & Folder Management)
Internet Training
Computers & Crafts

We don't do certified IT classes (although these are available through our outside Agency partners), the emphasis here is vey much based on learning for fun.

That is not to say that you can't obtain a job without our training, we have placed many people into work throught this centre over the years and are proud of our record.

We teach 'in-house' but will also come to you in some cases, and are always available to demonstrate Digital Inaging and Photo Restoration at any group functions across the dearne valley.
